When you think of Australian Films, what comes to mind. For me it things like “Australia”, “Mad Max” & “Rabbit Proof Fence”. However, these really don’t capture life in Australia in 2018. As important as some of these films might be, I fail to connect with them on any level other than the aesthetic.
“Franz” is unique in this sense. This film explores what life for a depressed teenager is like during 2018 in a town that has been pushed aside by our need to move from city to city with ease. Through my Brooklyn, NSW location scout, I look at Australia through a lens of realism, highlighting our beautiful country as well as commenting on the lack of appropriate mental health services that plague everyday Australians.
